Traditional septic systems only perform about 30 - 40% of wastewater treatment inside the tank. This means that septic effluent is still 60 - 70% untreated when it flows into the drainfield, where the treatment continues in the soil. Using his background in design and manufacturing of NSF 40 aerobic treatment units, RioVation founder Gig Drewery began R&D on ways to treat the effluent to a higher level before it leaves the tank. The result of his research is the BioMaze™ Fixed Film Media, kits that can convert septic tanks into a biofilm reactor, which performs 90+% of the treatment inside the tank. This makes the effluent clear and odorless, typically with CBOD5 and TSS levels in the single digit, thus better for the drainfield and the environment. According to university research and RioVation’s® field experience, drainfields clogged with biomat will be rejuvenated, brought back to life in a matter of a few weeks to a few months depending on the extent of the biomat issue. By converting the existing septic tank into a biofilm reactor, the effluent becomes high in dissolved oxygen, killing problem-causing microbes in the soil and introduces aerobic microbes which consume the biomat. BioMaze® will also protect drainfields against future failures.
RioVation® has a line of BioMaze® product in commercial/high strength models which can be incorporated into designs utilizing existing on retrofit projects or new tankage on new projects.
RioVation® also manufacturers a line of mini filtered pump vaults that suspend within a riser on the outlet end of the tank to provide level control when required.
